There is a glimmer of hope as wrestlers prepare for one more qualifying tournament for the Olympics which is billed for Rio, Brazil between August 6 and 21, this year.

President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Daniel Igali has stated that camping has commenced in Abuja ahead of the competition.

Igali also disclosed that Nigerian wrestlers will also be partaking in invitational tournaments in Spain, Germany, Romania and Canada in order to keep the athletes in good shape for the Olympic games.
The wrestling boss bluntly reiterated the fact that wrestlers’ chances of getting a medals at the Olympics largely depends on the support of the federal government.
He said: “It’s hard work and planning, we have to plan ahead. One of the most important things is not just qualifying, the wrestling event will start in August, which means we still have four months to prepare.
“So our medal hope depends on what the FG does from now till then.”
Nigeria already has seven wrestlers that will contend for medals at the forth coming Olympics in Rio.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung has disclosed that Nigeria will take part in eight sporting events only at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

Dalung who expressed disappointment at the level of preparation by athletes ahead of the games however promised that efforts will be made to speed things up.
