The Fair Housing Act and the Marketplace. Nearly 50 years ago, the United States federal government established the Fair Housing Act as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, in order to protect buyers and renters from discrimination based upon race, religion, nationality, lifestyle, gender, or familial status. It was designed and continues to be amended to ensure that the American dream of homeownership is not being denied based upon a person rather than their financial standing.
