– Aisha Buhari hails Cross River state governor and wife over developmental works in state
– Commences pet project in the state
The wife of the president, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, on Monday, April 18, commended the governor of Cross River state, Prof Ben Ayade and his wife, Lynda Ayade for providing an enabling environment to aid the reduction of maternal and infant mortality in Cross River state in particular and Nigeria in general.
Mrs Aisha Buhari made this remarks at the flag off of her pet project tagged, “Project Future Assured (PFA)” at Ikom township stadium in Cross River state.
She lauded the governor’s efforts in ensuring that the Maternal New born and Child Health (MNCH) week was kicked off and also applauded the wife of the governor, Dr Lynda Ayade for launching her foundation and choosing to be a maternal and child health ambassador for the state.
“I will like to commend the Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade for providing a conducive environment for the official flag off of MNCH week and also congratulate his beautiful wife, Dr. Lynda Ayade for initiating the Mediatrix Foundation. I wish her success in her new role as maternal and child health Ambassador in Cross River State,” she said.
Accompanied by the former deputy governor of Plateau state, Mrs Tallen and wives of the governors of Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Oyo amongst other dignitaries Mrs. Buhari emphasized the need for Nigeria to make frantic efforts to reduce its maternal and infant mortality rate which is said to be one of the highest in the world.
Mrs Buhari also dwelled on the desire of the federal government to bring quality healthcare service closer to the people the proposed establishment of one primary healthcare centre in each political wards across the country.
“The Federal Government is desirous of bringing this quality health care services closer to the people at the grassroots which is the primary reason for the establishment of one primary healthcare center in each political wards across the country,” the president’s wife said.
Immunizing children of Ikom, Mrs Buhari as part of the flagging off ceremony of her pet project, PFA, also commissioned two primary healthcare centres in Ikom.
In her remarks, the initiator of Mediatrix Development Foundation and wife of the Governor, Mrs Lynda Ayade called for increase quick intervention in correcting the dismal trend of maternal and child deaths in the state and also in the country adding that in Cross River, the percentage of skilled birth attendants stand at 41 percent, leaving the remaining 51 percent to gamblers.
Thanking her husband for establishing the Primary Healthcare Development Agency (PHDA) which she said will be the driver of her initiative, Mrs Ayade lamented that women still patronize unskilled birth attendants, prayer houses, and churches despite the free health programme made available to them.
According to her: “The ugly trend must be stopped in our society. Infant mortality rate is 75 in every 1000 live births. This high maternal and mortality rate contributes to the national picture and therefore is totally unacceptable.”
She, however, urged all stakeholders to ensure that quality health care services were made accessible and affordable to all citizenry regardless of status, and position
Corroborating what Mrs Ayade said, the state commissioner for health, Inyang Asibong reiterated the commitment of the state to the training of health workers in basic midwifery skill, establishment of an efficient health management system, the provision of drugs amongst other things.
