Giants lose ugly in 11 innings, bullpen falters
Long before their ugly 9-7, 11-inning loss to the Diamondbacks finally ended close to midnight Monday, the Giants seemed on target for a routine win.
[...] the Giants’ bullpen prolonged the opener of a 10-game homestand a couple of times.
Hunter Strickland lost a two-run lead in the eighth, and closer Santiago Casilla blew a one-run lead in the ninth.
Casilla was one strike from his 100th career save but surrendered Lamb’s tying home run, which ruined what would have been Denard Span’s biggest moment of glory at his new baseball home.
[...] the box score has Peavy charged with four runs on seven hits (including a Welington Castillo home run) in five innings — but the pitcher had to have liked the improvement he showed since pitching in Denver on Wednesday.
On Monday, Peavy gave up a double, triple, homer and four singles, and that seemed good enough on a night baseball returned to the Giants’ downtown ballpark.
Panik opened the fifth with a homer over the right-field wall, and the Giants scored three more times in the inning, once on Peavy’s bases-loaded walk.
