Giants lose fifth straight, offense a no-show
The Giants’ biggest rally — heck, their only rally — featured four walks and a double play.
Johnny Cueto pitched seven strong innings, well enough to win his fourth in a row, but the Giants managed only three hits despite the ineffectiveness of Arizona starter Shelby Miller, who issued five walks and was pulled before getting an out in the third inning.
The inning began with Miller walking four batters, starting with Cueto, who had an eight-pitch plate appearance.
Walks by Denard Span and Joe Panik loaded the bases, and another by Hunter Pence gave the Giants a gift run, ending Miller’s day.
The Diamondbacks scored three more times in the ninth, one on a grounder on which catcher Trevor Brown dropped a throw to the plate, and two on Jean Segura’s triple.
The Giants used four relievers, including Josh Osich, who plunked David Peralta for the second straight day, making Peralta furious and prompting players from both dugouts to empty onto the field.
