The National Union of Mineworkers has thrown its weight behind the ownership element of SA’s revised Mining Charter.

Johannesburg - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has thrown its weight behind the ownership element of the revised Mining Charter.

Union spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu said yesterday that it appreciated the revised charter’s focus of “black people” going an extra mile to put minimum ownership thresholds for the meaningful economic participation of black people.

“This is welcomed... We see in the majority of transactions where more than 5 000 workers own a lousy 3 percent and two black economic empowerment partners owning more than 20 percent of the company,” said Mammburu.
