Giants on facing Barry Bonds in Miami uniform: ‘It’ll be weird’
[...] again, it’s not often the hitting coach is Barry Bonds.
“It’ll be weird seeing Barry in a different uniform,” shortstop Brandon Crawford said.
The Giants host the Marlins in a three-game series starting Friday, and Bonds will suit up in a non-Giants uniform at a San Francisco ballpark for the first time since 1992.
Unlike a manager or pitching coach, a hitting coach rarely can be seen during a game beyond the dugout, so Bonds might not be visible unless the Giants show him on the scoreboard.
Before accepting the Marlins’ gig, Bonds had spoken with the Giants about a role, but nothing materialized.
The homers king, deprived of a spot in the Hall of Fame because of his link to performance-enhancing drugs, spent a week in spring training in 2014 as a Giants guest coach.
“I wouldn’t say it was any different than any other batting coach,” said Crawford, noting Bonds told him to keep his front shoulder closed against lefties, advice he has received from other coaches.
Which I thought was funny coming from him, because I don’t ever remember seeing him getting jammed, Crawford said.
Johnny Cueto, who gave up three runs in seven innings, failed to become the 10th pitcher to win his first four starts with the Giants.
“I missed my spots,” said Osich, adding he didn’t try to hit Peralta.
