Professor Muhammad Mu’azu Nguru has reminded Nigerians to look at President Muhammadu Buhari’s performance when he was chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) and take note of his success rate.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is a man of honour and honesty. This is what our reminiscence tells us. Every Nigerian can recollect that he held many exalted and lofty positions in the past, and he still remains an average Nigerian, in terms of wealth. He means well to Nigeria. That is why he works tirelessly. Of course, some people are making noise about almost everything but, the truth is, the poor is hopeful that tomorrow will be better. Ordinary Nigerians, who never enjoyed fruit of government in terms of education, health or education in the last 16 years, believes that with Buhari, his sufferings will be over in the nearest future.
“Recall that during the PTF days, Buhari, as the chairman of the Fund, with the fraction of the petro dollars given to him, left an indelible legacy. Up till now, if you go to any general hospital in the country or any university, you will see the footprints of the PTF. He constructed many roads, dams for water and agriculture. How did he do it? Go and check the records, Buhari took several months mapping and grapping, he visited all the nooks and crannies of the country and later settled down for work. I’m optimistic this is exactly what he did in the last eleven months.”
On the issue of the promises made by Buhari which have not been fulfilled, the professor said it was unfortunate Nigeria was going through a tough period.
“Buhari and his government are aware of the difficult conditions we, Nigerians, are passing through. It is not the wish of his government to see us in this present condition. No responsible leader will like to see his people suffering. He came to power to rescue our country from continuous deterioration and backsliding. To achieve such onerous assignment, one needs outmost sacrifice from all and sundry.”
On whether Nigerians are uncomfortable with President Buhari’s trips, Nguru said it wasn’t true.

“It’s not true. It’s only the wailing wailers that are making noise. First and foremost, I am a professor at the University of Maiduguri. I did my secondary education and my first degree in Kuwait, bagged my M.A. degree at Temple University, U.S.A., and returned to Nigeria where I did my PhD at the University of Ilorin. I, therefore, see no reason why I should stand by Buhari if I think what he is doing is wrong. His journeys are made in the interest of this country. Those making noise and criticising him are endlessly trying to weigh the president down. However, I want to encourage him and urge him to persevere because he is the last hope of the common man. I am sure he does not mean to enrich himself in anyway. For, if he wanted to be rich, he would have enriched himself long ago.”
