|||Durban - A Durban businessman was to be laid to rest on Friday after his bullet-ridden body was found dumped at the roadside and his torched car was located elsewhere.
Darryl Fernandez, 33, had left his Musgrave home on Saturday evening to buy something at a nearby petrol station store. But, when he failed to return home, his family went in search of him, until 11pm, said his brother, Gregory Fernandez.
Later that night, the family received a call from the police, saying they had found his body.
“He kept a close circle of friends in Newlands East and some from work. We were always together. If not, he stayed at home,” said Gregory.
His father, Lloyd Fernandez, was in shock when the Daily News spoke to him on Thursday at his home in Massbanker Road, Newlands East.
“When the news of his death was announced at home, his sister and mom were screaming. I was overcome with emotion. While walking down the stairs, I collapsed and hit my head on the floor. I was discharged from hospital on Tuesday. He was my eldest child,” said Fernandez sr.
Fernandez, who owned DF Tilers, leaves his wife and two daughters.
Police found his body in Coedmore Road, Seaview, near a railway bridge. He had been shot several times, in the head and stomach.
Fernandez’s Chevy Aveo was later recovered in eManzimtoti.
The Amanzimtoti Community Crime Prevention Organisation and metro police dog handler, Shawn Jooste, found the vehicle smouldering in Old Main Road behind Shulton Park.
Police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane, said the motive was unknown at this stage. A case of murder has been opened at Bellair police station. Police have yet to make any arrests.
Gregory said they had identified the body at the mortuary on Sunday. “Nothing was taken from him besides his life. His death leaves a void.
“My brother was a fun-loving person. He employed several tilers. My parents are very emotional,” Gregory said.
Fernandez’s wife, Sabrina, was unavailable for comment.
