Audi's V2I tech helps determine wait times at traffic lights

Audi unveiled a new traffic light countdown in its vehicles, Engadget reports.

The German automaker showcased the technology, which utilizes vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) framework, in Las Vegas recently. This new solution represents a high-profile example of how V2I technology can be integrated with smart city solutions to improve traffic flow and enhance efficiency within the city environment.

Audi’s new implementation is possible only because of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, which oversees and monitors all of the greater Las Vegas area’s traffic infrastructure. All traffic signals are centrally monitored and controlled, and Audi has worked with the commission to create cloud access for its vehicles.

The result is a seamless and quick conglomeration of traffic data through a single entity that can be distributed to Audi vehicles. Drivers gain increased visibility into the roads around them, seeing when lights will turn red or green, and knowing how long they’ll be stopped at a traffic light.

This is a particularly strong example of the benefits of V2I communication within the smart city environment. While not a particularly new or revolutionary technology, V2I can have some strong benefits as this example shows. Audi and other automakers should work with cities to bring these in-vehicle wait times and similar technologies to more areas and cities across the world.

Smart cities are cities that leverage IoT devices like sensors, smart lights, and smart meters to gather data that can be analyzed to gain new insights regarding their infrastructure, population, and public services.

Few cities around the world have actually grown into truly "smart" cities — most are still in the early phases of implementing some of these IoT devices, and have yet to data processing and analysis tools that can turn vast troves of data from millions of devices into a real-time view of a city's activity and operations.  

The smart cities segment has enormous potential as a market for IoT solutions, but it is also an inherently slow-moving market. Smart cities development faces many barriers around the world including tight municipal budgets, sluggish technology procurement guidelines for public agencies, privacy and cybersecurity concerns, and a pressing need for more IT staff at municipal agencies. Taking the time to deploy new, futuristic technologies can also be a luxury that many municipal agencies charged with the day-to-day running of a metropolis can’t afford. 

However, many cities are starting to address these challenges, and smart city development around the world is accelerating.
