49ers defense on record-shattering pace
After the 49ers dominated the Rams in a 28-0 season-opening win, head coach Chip Kelly said the performance confirmed what had been suspected:
The defense, of course, has been exposed during the 12 straight losses that have followed the Week 1 shutout.
The 49ers presumably felt good about their defense because general manager Trent Baalke has invested plenty of draft capital in the unit:
Ten of their 15 first-, second- or third-round picks since 2013 have been spent on defense.
[...] seven of those high-end defensive draft picks have played at least eight games this season, and six have played 10.
The other three of those 10 defensive picks: LB Corey Lemonier, LB Chris Borland and CB Will Redmond.
[...] the 49ers are on pace to establish franchise records for the most points, yards and rushing yards allowed in a season.
On pace for in 2016: 484 (would tie for eighth in NFL history)
On pace for in 2016: 6,645 (would tie for fourth in NFL history)
On pace for in 2016: 2,732 (would rank 22nd in NFL history; third-most since 1999)
