Indianapolis school official: Funding boost helps few

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Public Schools superintendent is calling for a re-evaluation of how the state pays for services for non-English-speaking students, saying schools with the highest populations are shortchanged.

Superintendent Lewis Ferebee tells the Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/2hvPpOG ) the district, where nearly 15 percent of students are non-English speaking, is burdened with steep costs.

The district and other Central Indiana schools don’t benefit from the extra money the state made available in 2015 for English-language learners because one-fourth of a district’s students need to be English-language learners to qualify for those funds.
