Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina became speaker pro tempore when Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the job over two weeks ago, but he has largely limited his actions to those needed to elect a new speaker. Now, an idea under consideration could give him the authority to bring certain types of urgent legislation to the floor as Republicans try to unite behind a speaker candidate. CBS News congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane has more.

Joran van der Sloot admitted to killing Natalee Holloway, judge says

A judge says the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba admitted he killed her. Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty Wednesday to extorting the Alabama teen's mother in 2010. The 36-year-old had demanded $250,000 from her in exchange for the location of her daughter's remains. Part of the plea deal required Van der Sloot to reveal information about what happened to Holloway.

Pentagon sends more aid to Israel hoping to deter further Middle East warfare

Security assistance from the U.S. is flowing into Israel as the Defense Department tries to boost deterrence efforts in the region. So far, the Pentagon has completed five assistance missions to Israel in the wake of the deadly Hamas attacks. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin has more from the Pentagon.
