Team sources have acknowledged to ESPN that fear exists that Luka Doncic, who publicly and privately expressed extreme frustration this season, could consider requesting a trade as soon as the summer of 2024 if Dallas doesn’t make significant progress by then. “He’d like to be here the whole time,” Cuban said earlier this week when asked about Doncic’s long-term optimism. “But we’ve got to earn that.”

Despite landing Kyrie Irving before the trade deadline, the Dallas Mavericks didn’t even make the play-in tournament, let alone the playoffs.

The Mavericks were eliminated from reaching the play-in tournament Friday night, and as a result the Knicks may not wind up with a first-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.  Though they were still in contention for the 10th and final seed in the Western Conference, the Mavericks sat a number of top players and played star Luka Doncic just one quarter in a 115-112 home loss to the Bulls on Friday night. Former Villanova forward, and Jalen Brunson teammate, Kris Jenkins criticized the claim from Mavericks owner Mark Cuban that the team’s push to re-sign Brunson “went south” when the guard’s parents “took over.” “Man the lies ….. you refused to offer him the contract he asked you ….. multiple times this is sick behavior Mark,” Jenkins tweeted Wednesday.

With the regular season nearly complete, we have seen enough from each player to evaluate them and their upcoming free-agency situation. We decided to look at some of the best upcoming free agents and check their stock, see what their next contract could look like, and weigh their odds of re-signing with their current team.

The downfall of the Dallas Mavericks has been one of the most disappointing developments of the season while also feeling inevitable for the past few weeks. After making it all the way to the Western Conference Finals last year, the Mavericks didn’t even qualify for the play-in tournament this campaign. Their inability to get over .500 despite another All-NBA season from Luka Doncic shows how decimated the roster is of talent.
