Kevin Durant: I see Damian Lillard, LeBron James, Draymond Green speak up but they don't get the 'sensitive' rap

0

Kevin Durant defends himself when he thinks he’s inaccurately criticized. While some view that as being overly sensitive, Durant believes he’s being honest and controlling his own narrative, even though it has led to him being singled out. “I don’t see this talked about — I see Damian Lillard, I see LeBron [James], I see Draymond [Green], I see lots of great players in our league speak up on social media, but they don’t get that ‘sensitive’ rep,” Durant told FOX Sports last week.

This KD-Kawhi playoff matchup comes 11 years after their first. Kawhi was a rookie with a remade jumper then. Last fall, I asked Chauncey Billups, who worked out with Kawhi during pre-draft, about KL2’s transformation into a No. 1 scorer:

We barely saw Kawhi vs. KD in the 2019 playoffs. Severe injuries to both since meant the NBA wasn’t guaranteed to ever see the matchup again. But here comes Game 1 of Suns-Clippers, a series headlined by stars who still look in their prime:

Halftime: Wolves 60, Lakers 49
An abysmal end to the first half for LA — Minnesota closed on a 16-6 run. LeBron has 16 points. AD has 12 points and 9 rebounds. LA needs to tighten its rotation in the second half — fewer bench-heavy minutes. They’ve looked disjointed thus far. – 11:17 PM
Mike Trudell @LakersReporter
A personal 5-0 run from Austin Reaves has LAL within a single point at 44-43, after a rough start for various reasons had them down by as many as 11.
Davis swatted a Wolves shot at the rim between Reaves buckets, sending LeBron out in transition. – 11:05 PM
Kurt Helin @basketballtalk
Said it today on @HolleyandSmith (as did @AshNicoleMoss ): Anthony Davis can’t just be good for the Lakers to win in the playoffs, he has to be great nightly. He was not in the first quarter, we’ll see if that changes, but so far LeBron is keeping the Lakers in it. – 10:55 PM

Lakers starters outside LeBron/AD start 1-8 shooting. LA crashing offensive glass, forcing turnovers, getting more shots.

Lots of high lottery picks in the starting lineup tonight, with four No. 1 picks (LeBron – 2003; AD – 2012; Karl Anthony-Towns – 2015; Anthony Edwards – 2020), a No. 2 (D’Angelo Russell – 2016) and a No. 4 (Mike Conley, 2007). – 8:47 PM

Here’s what I came up with after looking at everything all day yesterday. I labored over Fox-Curry and Brown/KD/LBJ/Kawhi/Siakam. It’s gonna be close. Fortunately for JB, momentum seems to be shifting toward him being a F & there’s been some 2nd team love: clnsmedia.com/will-jaylen-br…1:56 PM
Bobby Manning @RealBobManning
Also…important for Jaylen, I’m expecting a mass of LeBron support for 3rd. I wouldn’t vote him for various reasons, but he’s made a team every year from 05-22. It’ll take a lot to keep him off. If Butler, Randle are locks…that leaves 1 spot for Brown, Lauri, Siakam, Kawhi, KD – 1:54 PM

In the end, I suggested this template for building an offense around LeBron.
A historic example: Kyrie Irving, Iman Shumpert, Richard Jefferson, and Channing Frye from the 2016-17 season
A current example: Dennis Schroder, Austin Reaves, Malik Beasley, and Anthony Davis. pic.twitter.com/yPgOXQoabO7:33 PM

There were also some predictable results – like the fact that having more bigs on the floor bogged down LeBron’s offenses a bit. Interestingly, after avoiding playing LeBron with 2 bigs at the start of the year, the Lakers have lapsed on this approach since the trade deadline. pic.twitter.com/ATKIU3rnMB7:20 PM
Todd Whitehead @CrumpledJumper
My initial hunch was that the best way to build an offense around LeBron would be to surround him with as many shooter types as possible; but, actually, adding more dynamic- and spot-up- shooting wings and more stretch bigs didn’t produce huge gains in scoring efficiency. pic.twitter.com/49DgbO1qpr7:13 PM

LeBron has played with 214 teammates across 20 NBA seasons and 3 different teams. He’s played with plenty of examples of players from each of our 11 offensive roles, which give us lots of natural experiments to see what has worked and what hasn’t. pic.twitter.com/dDrEM5sodB7:08 PM

The 2nd Team is headlined by Nikola Jokic, who, despite having forward eligibility, was left off the 1st Team. Donovan Mitchell and Damian Lillard – who hold the top single-game scoring mark this season with 71 points – are projected to earn 2nd Team honors. Miami’s Jimmy Butler is projected to earn 2nd Team honors as well, which would mark the first time in his career. New York’s Julius Randle rounds out the 2nd Team. -via HoopsHype / April 13, 2023

Kevin Durant believes he wears a scarlet letter of sorts for being sensitive, while other athletes who engage with critics aren’t perceived in the same manner. Durant unequivocally cleared that up. “Hell, no,” he said. “I don’t regret anything I do. I don’t regret my time in the league because I feel like I maximize every day as a player. I feel like I get the most out of myself every time I step on the floor. “So, it’s like regardless of the results and the wins and losses, I can live with that part of it. I would never say anything I do is a failure. We could lose 82 games in a season, but if I come to work and every rep is done with intention and with force, every rep I can live with.” -via FoxSports.com / April 13, 2023

Durant looked to LeBron James, who then played for the Cavaliers, for advice. James had met with an even larger surge of requests when he was drafted No. 1 four years prior, so Durant knew he would be able to give him an informed and relatable vantage point on what to do. “When I first came into the league, we just had little conversations here and there about the shoe game,” Durant said. “I was in a heavy shoe battle when I came out of college — Adidas, Nike — and guys like LeBron had went through that. So, to bounce ideas off of some of his team and just to see what he went through in some of those experiences was big for me. He was close in age — four years older than me in the draft — so he’d been through similar stuff with the same people as well. He was probably the main guy that I looked at — and I still look at to this day — to see what he’s doing off the floor and seeing if there’s anything that we could potentially work on at some point. I really admire what Klutch (Sports Group), SpringHill (Company) and just LeBron, Inc. have done. That s— is one of the best brands — not just in sports, but in business in general.” -via The Athletic / April 12, 2023
