Europe Refugee Crisis: EU Plans To Strengthen Border Control, To Reveal Proposal Next Week

The European Commission is set to propose the formation of a permanent border force and coastguard agency that would take control of the bloc’s external frontiers, in a move that would represent a significant transfer of sovereignty from national governments. According to EU officials and documents seen by the Financial Times, the bloc’s executive will reveal its plans next week.

North Korea, South Korea Hold Rare Talks In Kaesong City To Reduce Tensions

Delegates from North and South Korea held talks Friday in Kaesong in southern North Korea, aimed at reducing tensions between the two rival countries, reports said. The talks are a rarity for both the countries, which have been witnessing a strained relationship since August when a land mine explosion at the demilitarized zone injured two South Korean soldiers -- an incident that was blamed on North Korea.

Yum Brands, the owner of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, is set to modernize its restaurants and improve operations globally and unveiled a plan to return about $6.2 billion to shareholders before the company splits its China business. The company announced in October that it would separate into two publicly traded companies -- Yum! Brands and Yum! China -- by the end of 2016.

Philippine Presidential Front-Runner Grace Poe To Appeal To Supreme Court After Second Adverse Ruling

US Begins Trial Of Biometric Technology With Facial, Eye Screening At Mexican Border

The U.S. government launched a program Thursday to collect facial and eye scans of people crossing into the country through the Mexican border, as part of a plan to track those staying on expired visas. About half of the people in the U.S. illegally are reportedly believed to have extended their visit more than what their visas allowed, but authorities were not able to identify them due to lack of a checkout system.

ISIS Sells Oil To Syria's Assad Regime, Some To Turkey, US Official Says

Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government has been buying oil from the Islamic State group, which has made over $500 million so far through the trade, a top U.S. Treasury official said Thursday. Adam Szubin added that some of the ISIS oil went to Turkey -- an allegation also made by Moscow after Ankara downed a Russian fighter jet on the Syrian border late November.



Beijing May Ease Household Residence Rules

BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing has proposed a new system giving permanent residence status to millions of people already living in the city, giving them better access to services like healthcare and education. All Chinese citizens have a hukou, or residence registration account, which determines their access to education and other social welfare services.

After 45 hours of deliberation, jurors in a sex crimes trial convicted former Oklahoma City police Officer Daniel Holtzclaw, 29, on several of the most serious charges filed against him, including rape and forcible oral sodomy. Out of a total of 36 charges filed against him, Holtzclaw was found guilty Thursday of 18 charges, including  four counts of rape, and faces more than 200 years in prison, CBS News reported.

SpaceX Returns With ORBCOMM Satellite Launch, May Attempt Ground-Based Landing Next Week

SpaceX is returning to space with the launch of communications satellites for Orbcomm Inc. on Dec. 19. A newly upgraded Falcon 9 rocket will carry 11 small commercial communications satellites to space from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The upcoming satellite launch could also see the first ground-based attempt for SpaceX to land its first-stage booster.
