Overnight fire tore through the Port of Iberia
At the Port of Iberia on Thursday, a massive fire tore through the area that took crews over four hours to contain the fire.
NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) -- At the Port of Iberia on Thursday, a massive fire tore through the area that took crews over four hours to contain the fire.
The Iberia Parish Fire District says they were notified of flames coming from the port around 8p.m. on Thursday. Craig Romero, executive director for the Port of Iberia, says he was shocked when he first learned the port was up in flames.
"It was a surprise to me, I was in I think Mel's Diner eating dinner with my wife and children and someone sent me a copy of a video of a fire at the port. I didn't know what was going on," said Romero.
Romero says he rushed to the scene of the fire after he heard the news and saw multiple crews there.
"We drove by there and it was multiple fire trucks fighting the fire and I don't know what was in it," Romero explained.
Romero says he is thankful that the workers at the port are okay and that no equipment or buildings were destroyed.
"That's a good thing, that's really good anytime you have something like that you wonder about your equipment or your building," he said.
Officials say fortunately no one was injured in the fire.
