LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- More than six years have gone by since that September night in 2017, when a husband and wife were gunned down in a restaurant parking lot. Today, the man who was arrested for their murders, roams free and the daughter of the victims wants answers.

On Sept. 29, 2017, Larry and Madrona Brown were killed in the parking lot after dining at a local restaurant. Their daughter, Briane Cahee, remembers the night her mother and stepfather were taken from her.

"To know that my mom’s not answering the phone and going to the police station they’re telling us my stepdad’s at the hospital and she didn’t make it. Very devastating," said Cahee.

After only 10 days an arrest was made. John Christopher McGraw was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of the Brown’s which brought Cahee some relief, and she would follow the incoming court dates very closely.

"When I was out of town, they know I was going to drive. Regardless if I’m in Russia, I’m coming," Cahee explained.

Since the arrest, there was public silence on the case. Only when Cahee reached out did we learn the case was dismissed in March of 2022.

A source close to the investigation tells us while on that night, McGraw and Mr. Brown did discuss issues with a car McGraw purchased from Brown; with no video footage or concrete evidence that McGraw pulled the trigger, there just wasn’t enough to convict him of the crime.

And now the family is back at square one, trying to find the person responsible for killing Larry and Madrona.

Cahee says she will keep fighting for justice for her mom, no matter how long it takes.

So what’s next?

With McGraw’s case dismissed he can’t be tried again. As it stands, the Browns' case is closed but it can be reopened if there’s new evidence. It’s important to know there’s is no timeline to charge someone for a crime that is punishable by life in prison.

So if you know something that could bring the family closure, contact law enforcement.
