Trial for 11 year old charged in Iberia Parish homicide pushed back another week
The trial will pick back up next Thursday, as Judge Hamilton expressed the urgency of the case and its much needed conclusion with an 11 year old's life at stake.
NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY)-- In New Iberia, an 11-year-old girl is on trial for the alleged first degree murder of 36 year old Kameran Bedsole. Her trial is now being pushed back another week.
It has been exactly 100 days since that 11 year old has been in police custody where she is charged for the first degree murder of Bedsole. The initial trial was set for Thursday, March 7, to find out if she will stay in custody or be released back to her family. At the trial, the child's attorney Ronald Haley requested a motion of continuance as they claimed to have a short amount of time to look over all the evidence presented in the case.
News 10 has followed this story since Bedsole's murder occurred in November. The child was arrested in late November.
Over a week later, the mother and 15-year-old brother of the child were arrested as well. Family, friends and advocacy groups showed up in support of the 11 year old who her family describes as a wonderful kid with a bright future ahead of her.
"Just a whole bundle of joy and love and man, you know, she does. She's amazing, and almost everything is said and done. She's going to do amazing things," the 11-year-old's sister said.
Honorable judge Roger Hamilton granted the request for the trial to now begin on Thursday March 14 at 1 p.m. News 10 spoke with the advocacy groups present in support for the child after the news of the continuance.
"Asking the community again to please come out, keep talking about it, keep coming out here, keep showing up, keep spreading awareness," Angela Eaglin said. "It could be your child one day that's in here in the juvenile detention center for 100 days."
Judge Hamilton ordered for both parties to present evidence to him in the court on Monday to make sure both sides are prepared for Thursday's trial.
“We are not happy with it being continued as we wanted her out here with us today, and it's going to be well over 100 days as far as it continuing next week on March 14, which will be well over a lot of time, 60 days. So we're not happy about it, but we're glad that we've seen that she is in good spirits,” Laramie Griffin said.
The trial will pick back up next Thursday, as Judge Hamilton expressed the urgency of the case and its much needed conclusion with an 11 year old's life at stake.
