LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)-- From submitting the application to being a patrol deputy and everything in between, News 10 has shown what all needs to be done to have a career in law enforcement.

In the conclusion to the series, we talk about the most impactful part of the job for those who choose the career.

Through this entire experience we've learned about every step of the journey to becoming an officer in law enforcement. But what about the intangibles?

You can talk about the process and the career trajectory in the profession, but the biggest takeaway from meeting so many of the men and women in law enforcement is the purpose they found through their work.

“My community has been one of the greatest things I've ever been able to accomplish here. I love walking and talking with people, I love seeing how we can help them,” Sgt. William Lavergne said.

“Every morning I get dressed to put a criminal in jail to protect the public. I take pride in doing a good job in investigations and seeking justice for a family.

Purpose is what fuels the passion for so many who start their law enforcement journey and see the effects they can make on the community, but it isn't just the men and women on patrol, leaders also find fulfillment in helping their fellow officers improve.

"Seeing these new cadets come in, watching them go from knowing anything to being a proficient patrol officer, knowing that the training that we do makes a difference,” Cpt. Sam Brown said.

"I think seeing my deputies grow and develop in their professions is the biggest highlight for me to help them accomplish that is my greatest satisfaction,” Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mark Garber said.

Hearing these answers and seeing the energy and enthusiasm brought to each day showed what it really means to wear the star and shield on your uniform; it means making a difference in your community and taking pride in your team.

"I feel wanted,” Patricia Landry said. “I do my job. It’s fulfilling."

"If you want to make a change or you want to make a difference,” Tiffany Rochon said. “I mean, this is pretty much the best part."

Anyone interested in taking a chance and starting a new career of service through law enforcement is encouraged to reach out to your local agency and begin your journey.
