Lafayette Parish School System votes to relocate, discontinue multiple school programs
Many community members have already expressed their opposition with decisions that were approved for Paul Breaux out of fear of the school closing due to low enrollment.
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)-- Decisions were made Thursday regarding the future of certain programs in a couple schools in the Lafayette Parish School System. One of those schools has already stirred up community controversy due to the two programs that it will now be losing in the upcoming school year.
Students, teachers and community members gathered for this emotional school board meeting Wednesday, with many in tears or storming out after motions were approved. The meeting lasted more than five hours with some attendees expressing their opinions and pleas in hopes of keeping the programs as-is at the schools.
The Lafayette Parish School System approved a few items on their agenda that concerned then later frustrated some community members, including:
- The relocation of Paul Breaux Middle School's full-time academic gifted program and the pull-out gifted enrichment program to Edgar Martin Middle. This is the result of a five to four vote from the school board.
- The relocation of Paul Breaux's French and Spanish Immersion Magnet Academy to Scott Middle School. This is the result of a five to four vote.
- The transfer of the elementary full-time academic Gifted Program at Corporal Michael Middlebrook Elementary School to the full-time academic Gifted Program at Woodvale Elementary
- The discontinuation of the Mandarin Chinese Immersion Magnet Academy Program at Corporal Michael Middlebrook Elementary for all grades
Many community members have already expressed their opposition with the decisions that were approved for Paul Breaux out of fear of the school closing due to low enrollment once the gifted and immersion programs are gone. Local organizations have previously made efforts towards voicing their disapproval of this plan for Paul Breaux.
