New Iberia 11-year-old murder trial to start on Thursday

The first-degree murder trial for the 11-year-old New Iberia girl, originally scheduled for last week, is now taking place Thursday at 1:00 p.m.

IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- The first-degree murder trial for the 11-year-old New Iberia girl, originally scheduled for last week, is now taking place Thursday at 1:00 p.m.

For over 100 days, the 11-year-old has been in police custody following the November killing of 36-year-old Kameron Bedsole in New Iberia. The trial was originally supposed to take place on Nov. 7, but the defense requested a motion for continuance after claiming they were not given the proper time to look over all evidence provided. Judge Roger Hamilton granted the continuance as the trial is now scheduled for this Thursday. The family of the accused was at the original trial and expressed the challenges they have been facing.

The girl's family says they have waited far too long to get the child back home and hope after Thursday's trial they can finally be reunited. Ah'lajah Washington, the sister of the child says, the trail process had been difficult for the family.

"It is really heartbreaking that we have to go through this as a family. She is away from her loved ones, her family, her friends, her grandmothers, her great grandmother," said Ah'lajah. "You know, she didn't do it. She's innocent. She's an innocent baby girl."

Her oldest sister Ahshiriya Washington refuses to see her baby sister as a killer.

"That is not a killer. Her overall spiritual being doesn't give off killer. It is crazy that this situation is not mentally breaking her, but it is a lot," Ahshiriya explained.

Multiple advocacy groups like the Village 337, Evolve Louisiana and A New Chapter Push are encouraging the community to show their support.

"We are asking the community again to please come out," said vice president of the village 337 Angela Eaglin. "Keep talking about it. Keep coming out here. Keep showing up. Keep spreading awareness. It could be your child one day that's in here at the detention center for 100 days."

The trial will start on Thursday at the Iberia Parish Courthouse at 1:00 p.m. with hopes of a verdict coming either later that day or on Friday.

After the initial arrest of the child in November, the 11-year-old's mother, 40-year-old Sabrina Washington and 15-year-old brother were arrested over a week later in relation to the Bedsole homicide as well. Sabrina Washington is facing two counts of accessory after the fact while the 15-year-old was charged with first degree murder. We will provide information regarding their trial dates as they become available.
