Lafayette Parish School System says student teachers will have opportunity to receive $1,000 stipend
Julia Reed, President of the Lafayette Parish Association of Educators, said student teachers are important to have in education.
LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. (KLFY)-- To alleviate the teacher shortage in the parish, the Lafayette Parish School System is creating this initiative to attract future leaders.
"Student teaching back then was unpaid and it was often a very great financial hardship and that would either cause people to have to go into debt or work a job or two while they're trying to teach full time essentially,"
To be eligible for the stipend, student teachers must commit to a two-year employment term after graduation as a classroom teacher. Locally, approximately 600 teachers are needed to end the shortage. Julia Reed, President of the Lafayette Parish Association of Educators, said student teachers are important to have in education.
"As a teacher having another highly qualified teacher to work with you is really important, its even more important, its even more important to have another teacher sometimes when there is not a teacher available for a position," Reed said.
Reed said the organization is hoping to hire as many teachers as possible moving forward.
"What we're looking at and we're hopeful for is that we can staff as many classrooms as possible with teachers who hold a full teaching certificate and that's going to be beneficial for our kids and will be beneficial for other teachers," Reed said.
This new program starts during the 2024-2025 school year.
