Speed cameras to be placed on Basin Bridge

BREAUX BRIDGE, La. (KLFY) -- Many people in Acadiana have experienced traffic delays on the basin bridge. Now there's a project that officials say will reduce the amount of car crashes and thus, create less traffic delays.
Deidra Druilhet with the Department of Transportation says this will improve reaction time and stopping distance between vehicles.
"We are changing the speed limit signs and of course installing speed radar detection devices," said Druilhet.
Under this new project, both cars and trucks will now be able to travel at a speed of sixty miles per hour. Drivers will also notice new feedback signs to warn those who need to slow down.
"With all vehicles going sixty miles per hour it basically creates an opportunity for us to allow a consistent flow of traffic and create opportunities for vehicles to have more time to react and have better response reactions," said Druilhet.
While they have just started installing these new devices and signs…Officials say it will take several months to complete it.
