LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- On Tuesday, Lafayette City Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux touched on a highly talked about topic during the regular council meeting.

"Every expert and every enforcement entity that I have been able to speak to is saying that this is only going to get worse," councilman Boudreaux explained. "We know we have other community components that need to chime in and do their part such as households, education, and other community things.  I want to see our law enforcement plan."

The new law that goes into effect on July 4 will allow any law-abiding person 18 or older to carry a concealed handgun in Louisiana.

"I want to get in front of it. I don't want us to have to come from behind, I don't want us to be attending funeral after funeral and incident after incident, I don't officers worn down because we're not prepared," Boudreaux expressed.

The councilman says implementing gun free zones could help make people feel safe and not expend resources.

"To try to minimize where people can do certain things. What happens when you go into Walmart? How does our Mardi Gras look? How does our Festival International look and who's doing what?" Boudreaux added.
