LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Tonight LCG held its monthly council meeting and in attendance was Lafayette Parish School System superintendent.

LPSS Superintendent Francis Touchet stood before the city council to give an update on what is going on with LPSS. But before the meeting News 10 spoke with councilman Elroy Broussard who told us, although discussions about the recent decisions surrounding Paul Breaux Middle was not a topic on the agenda, he will invite the superintendent to speak with him personally about specific concerns with the removal of immersions courses.

"But I'm planning on talking to the superintendent one-on-one to give him my views of it being a parish school board representative for nine years and being a graduate of Paul Breaux High, the last class of 1970," said Broussard.

Touchet addressed city council members about the issues facing LPSS right now, and plans to collaborate with council members in order to achieve success.

"This is not the only time that I will come in front of you, I will continue to update you. My goal as a superintendent is to come to three of your meetings, at the beginning, middle and at the end of the year," said Touchet.

Broussard briefly shared the impact of the Paul Breaux Middle controversy before offering to be a link for LPSS and LCG.

"I'm always, always available to be that bridge between the school board and LCG or whatever, if you want me to be," said Broussard.

Broussard says he wants one of those conversations to focus on what children enrolled in multiple immersion courses are expected to do, once the programs are moved.

"It's always difficult to start over. And then when you are gifted enough to be in two programs, you don't want to lose that person, you want to encourage that person to keep doing what they're doing and give them whatever nourishment they need to be successful," Broussard explained.

He says the ultimate goal is to make sure students benefit from every decision made. That can only happen from conversations with everyone.

"Now we need to come together and have a conversation to see what was the best case scenario for us to do for our students. This may not be the answer, but we certainly can have some input to what's coming up next," said Broussard.

Touchet agreed to speak with me about the updates at the time, but due the time restraint of the meeting we were unable to get more information.
