LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A New Iberia man who was convicted of killing 22-month-old Kaceston Freeman will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Christopher Ledet, Jr. was sentenced to serve the remainder of his life at hard labor for the 2022 murder of the toddler in Lafayette. District Judge Michele Billeaud handed down the sentence in the 15th Judicial District Court in Lafayette on March 13.
The toddler died on July 21, 2022 at his house in Lafayette. Ledet was Quintaya Freeman’s boyfriend, and had babysat the toddler the day of his death. Medical testimony showed that Kaceston suffered a lacerated liver, a hemorrhage at the base of his brain, retinal hemorrhages and a scalp hemorrhage, and Ledet failed to report the injuries or seek medical care for the toddler.
Lafayette Police Department detective Brooke Duhon testified that Ledet gave conflicting
statements when questioned by her after Freeman’s death.
Assistant District Attorneys Andi Lex, Frederick Welter and Alan Haney prosecuted the case
through the trial. Lex said the team was pleased with the result.
“It is surely bittersweet for Quintaya at this point, as there is nothing we can do to bring Kaceston back to her, but at least the person who killed that little boy will be in prison the rest of his life,” Lex said.
District Attorney Don Landry said this was a very difficult case.
"We are just happy that we could give Kaceston’s family justice," Landry said. "Ledet injured this toddler very seriously when he was babysitting him, put him to bed before the mother came home from work and did not tell anyone what he had done, then he sat up that night and searched the internet for ways to cover up his crime."
