A service honoring the life and service of Laurita D. Pete will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Crowley.

CROWLEY, La. (KLFY) -- A beloved Acadiana public servant will be laid to rest in Crowley this weekend.

A service honoring the life and service of Laurita D. Pete will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Crowley. Pete died March 21 at Ochsner Acadia General Hospital in Crowley.

Pete began a legacy of trailblazing by being the first Black certified Department of Public Welfare case worker in the State of Louisiana. She went on to enter the Louisiana school system, where she served as an English educator for 27 years with the Acadia Parish School Board. She served 12 years on the Crowley City Council, the first Black woman to serve on the council.

As an advocate for children, she partnered with the National Office of the Children’s Defense Fund, and the Louisiana Office Children’s Defense Fund on the Cradle to Prison to Pipeline initiative. Her lifetime of service included affiliations with the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, NAACP and the Planning Board of Louisiana 15th Judicial District.

The Wake Service will be held Friday, March 29 at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church from 3-5 p.m. Visitation on Saturday, March 30, will be at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church from 10-11 a.m. Interment will be in South Crowley Cemetery.
