The NIH’s oldest and most coveted grant is the Research Project Grant, or R01, which can sustain an independent research project for up to five years. But since the 1980s, the number of biomedical scientists receiving R01’s before the age of 37 has plummeted fivefold, according to a paper published in Science last week.
