Vote now: Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week

Make your choice for the top performance among boys high school athletes from March 4-9.

Editor’s note: We prohibit the use of bots and any other artificial methods of voting. Suspicious activity could lead to the disqualification of candidates and a permanent suspension of the Athlete of the Week poll. No voting by email: Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.


Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from March 4-9.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Alonzo Alvarez, Heritage baseball: Went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs as Heritage defeated Burlingame 8-0. Also had an RBI in a 3-2, eight-inning win over Vacaville. The Patriots finished the week 4-1-1.

ArDarius Grayson, Oakland Tech basketball: The junior point guard filled the stat sheet — 20 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five steals — to lead the Bulldogs to a 79-55 rout of Centennial-Bakersfield in the CIF Division II state title game. It was Oakland Tech’s first state championship.

Evan Lucas, Athenian basketball: The senior had 20 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and two steals as Athenian, a small private school in Danville, rolled past Verdugo Hills 67-49 to capture the Division V state championship in Sacramento.

Quinten Marsh, Valley Christian baseball: The Stanford commit struck out 13, walked none and allowed one hit in five shutout innings and also had two hits in four at-bats to lead sizzling Valley Christian to a 6-0 victory over Palo Alto. Valley Christian began this week with a 6-0 record.

William Myers, Campolindo baseball: The pitcher/infielder finished the week 4 for 7 with two doubles and two RBIs. The junior also scored two runs and walked. On the mound, he pitched four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out five, to earn the win as Campolindo defeated Archie Williams 4-0 to improve to 2-1.

Will Polishuk, Berkeley baseball: Had three hits in four at-bats, scored two runs and knocked in a run to lead Berkeley to a 12-4 victory over Liberty. Also went 3 for 4 in a 10-0 rout of Dougherty Valley. Berkeley is 3-0 on the season.

Jack Richardson, Northgate lacrosse: Contributed eight goals and five assists as Northgate defeated Dougherty Valley 15-1 and Acalanes 14-5. Shot 53.3% for the week (eight goals in 15 shots) and picked up 10 groundballs and caused nine turnovers as Northgate improved to 4-1.

Benjamin Tower, James Logan baseball: The junior pitched a complete-game one-hitter with four strikeouts as James Logan defeated Pittsburg 5-0 in a nonleague game to improve its record to 3-1.

Danylo “Danny” Yavir, Branham tennis: Playing at No. 1 singles, Yavir won third-set tiebreakers in victories over Evergreen Valley and Willow Glen. He also has wins this season against Archbishop Mitty, Valley Christian and Milpitas.

Eric Yun, Menlo School golf: The senior had his best nine-hole round ever, shooting a 7-under 30 at Baylands Golf Links in Palo Alto, to capture medalist honors in his team’s West Bay Athletic League loss to rival Sacred Heart Prep. He has been the medalist in all four of his matches this season.
