Vote now: Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week

Make your choice for the top performance among girls high school athletes from March 4-March 9

Editor’s note: We prohibit the use of bots and any other artificial methods of voting. Suspicious activity could lead to the disqualification of candidates and a permanent suspension of the Athlete of the Week poll. No voting by email: Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.


Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) girls Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from March 4-March 9.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Ruby Camacho-Cuen, Freedom softball: Camacho-Cuen batted 2 for 2 with three RBIs and a homerun in a 9-5 win over Foothill. Freedom has won its last three games.

Katelyn Espino, Foothill track and field:  Espino won the 400M dash at the Morisoli/White Invitational over the weekend with a time of 1:01.88.

Isabella Flores, Piedmont Hills softball:  Flores threw a no-hitter and struck out eight batters on 99 pitches in a 2-0 win over Cupertino. Piedmont Hills is 4-1 to start the season. 

Taelor Johnson, Half Moon Bay softball: The sophomore had four hits, three RBIs and a double in Half Moon Bay’s 20-2 win over Terra Nova.

Megan Lamy, Leland softball: The senior didn’t allow a run and struck out five batters in five innings in Leland’s 1-0 win over Notre Dame-San Jose. The Chargers are 5-2 this season.

Samantha Nissen, Amador Valley lacrosse: The sophomore totaled four goals and an assist in the Dons’ 16-15 win over Redwood. Amador Valley has won 3 of its last four games. 

Mia Rodriguez, Archbishop Mitty softball: Rodriguez batted 3 for 3 with an RBI double to lead the Monarchs to a 10-0 win over San Mateo in the Circle of Champions tournament. The Monarchs won the tournament, beating Westmont, Leland, San Mateo and Salinas. 

Jayla Stokes, Bishop O’Dowd basketball: Stokes scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Dragons’ final game of the season. Bishop O’Dowd lost to Bishop Montgomery 52-40 in the CIF Division I state final. 

Daijha Teague, Oakland basketball: The senior had a near triple-double as she scored 15 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and dished out seven assists to lead the Wildcats to a CIF Division V state title win over top seeded Montgomery-San Diego. 

Marin Yamada, Menlo lacrosse: The sophomore scored the winning goal in overtime in a 9-8 win over Tamalpais. Menlo has started the season 2-0.
