Nairobi residents set to have adequate and quality access to water and sanitation services.

Nairobi City County is in the final stages of developing policy on water and sanitation which will provide guidelines on the management of water and sanitation services.
While speaking during the water and sanitation policy workshop  held in Elementaita Country Lodge Naivasha, the County Executive for Environment, Water, Energy and Natural Resources Mr Larry Wambua said that the policy will  provide the framework for efficiency in water resources management as well as ensure security and integrity of water and sanitation systems. " the goal of this policy is to facilitate equitable, adequate and quality access to water and sanitation services. Without a policy there is no direction" added Mr Wambua.
Mr Wambua said that water is a constitutional right for every Kenyan. He said that the Cabinet Secretary for Water is committed to working with the County Government to ensure safe and enough water for all.
The County Chief Officer for Water Sanitation &Energy Mr Mohamed Abdi said that the county is committed to working with stakeholders and partners to develop water policy which will govern the maintenance of water." without a policy the County will not be able to provide the water services as required" said the Chief Officer.
Mr.Muguna the Ag. Managing Director for Nairobi water and sewerage company said that the water company was still relying on the old city council by-laws hence the need for a water policy to help improve service delivery. Mr Muguna admitted that currently water supply is less than demand but the company has ensured that hospitals and learning institutions have water 24/7. Informal settlements are also provided with water to avoid water-borne diseases.
The workshop was attended by various Assembly committee chair members for; Water and sanitation, energy, environment, deputy chair of the finance committee, delegated legislative, senior county officers, Governor's Economic Advisor and USAID- KIWASH representatives.
