County Clamps Properties Over Rates Arrears
The County Government on 23rd August 2018 clamped four properties within the Central Business District over rate arrears totalling Shs12 billion.
The morning operation targeted Chester House, North Eastern Investments, Princely, Wines and Spirits, which owes the county Shs 9,042,158.
Rating Act Section 18 and 19 allows the county government to demand payment of rent in respect of the property and place a charge on the respective property if in arrears mandate by County Government.
The proprietor of Princely House LTD(left) pleads with the county officers not to clamp down his property.
In 2017 operations, the county government netted Shs300 million. The county administration relies heavily on the payment of rates and other charges to offer service to the residents of the city and failure by the property owners to honour their obligations impacts negatively on the delivery of services.
Unlike the previous years, the County does not intend to grant out waivers and therefore property owners are encouraged to clear their dues before the county strikes.
Other revenues streams targeted are markets, County Rentals Houses and Stalls, Car parks and Outdoor Advertisements.
The Finance and Economic Planning sector have in the meantime served notice physically and through electronic and print media to property owners who owe the county to comply.
