In a recent board meeting the SDCA reduced the price of 2020 memberships to $5. If you renew before Sept. 1st you can have the 2020 SD Chess Megabase for free that includes over 1700 games.

How will this COVID affect tournament turnouts? Many organizers and players have turned to the web to play in tournaments, but the thoughts, temptation, and accusations of opponents cheating increase. The risk of getting sick with OTB tournaments can be reduced by coming up with new policies is the answer for some organizers. Imagine not shaking hands before a tournament. It's seems very un South Dakotan maybe un american. Here's a list of new rules that some TD's are implementing.
I remember playing chess in a Sioux Falls park in 2007. It was a USCF rated tournament and on Stephen Norquist's birthday so we unofficially called the tournament the “Norky Open”. It was the first of it's and kind and we hoped it would be an annual event, but unfortunately, like many SD tournaments the tradition of annual tournaments do not last. It's was a sunny day and a fun tournament.

Paul James Salem
1947 - 2018
Sioux Falls, formerly of Madison - On Thursday, October 4, 2018, Paul Salem, brother, son, champion chess player, and devout Catholic, passed peacefully at age 71. He was at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota after struggling with declining health for the last two years. Paul will be remembered forever by his family and friends, as a giving person who always put others wishes before his own.
