[Men's Soccer] Bacone Takes Down Cavs in Season Finale
SHAWNEE- St. Gregory's (4-11-2, 2-8 SAC) entered Tuesday's match-up with Bacone (9-7-1, 4-5-1 SAC) with a slight chance at cracking into the top 8 teams in the SAC before the playoffs begin, but the Warriors crushed the Cavs hopes with a 1-0 win at Fr. Victor Roberts Field.
The two teams played very evenly, as each team put four shots on goal. The chilly contest was a physical one, in which the Cavs were called for 15 fouls, while the Warriors were only called for 9 (8 of which came in the second half). The only goal of the game was scored by Jose Navarro in the seventy-first minute of the game, off of a long pass from James McGroarty. McGroarty made a long pass to a crowd in front of the Cavs net, off of a free-kick, and Navarro was able to get a foot on the ball and push it to the back of the net. The goal was nearly dis-allowed, due to the possibility that the play was offsides, but the call ended up standing as a goal. The Cavaliers frantically tried to rally late to tie the game, but their efforts were too little, too late.
Declan Simpson (SO/Moreton, England) stopped three of the four shots that he faced in the loss. Francisco Castillo (JR/Houston, Texas) led the Cavaliers with two shots on goal, while Lesli Feh and Vanja Radulovic (FR/Zagreb, Croatia). Feh's shot on goal was likely the team's best scoring chance, as his close-range header was barely deflected wide by the Warriors keeper.
The Cavaliers will now head into their offseason, where they'll continue to train and get prepared for next year, with hopes of making the SAC Playoffs.
