[Women's Basketball] Crase's Double-Double Leads Cavs Past Jarvis Christian
SHAWNEE- On Saturday afternoon in Sumner Field House, St. Gregory's (1-2) hosted Jarvis Christian College (0-2) in their home opener, and the Cavs came away with the 62-49 win. The Cavaliers struggled in the early going, but they bounced back by halftime, and from then on it was all SGU.
Jarvis Christian was in the drivers seat for the first quarter of play, as they forced the Cavs into committing 10 turnovers, and held them to just a .300 field goal percentage. Going into the second quarter, JCC led SGU 13-10, but the Cavs fought hard and gained the lead early on as they started to knock down shots. Going into halftime, SGU led JCC 27-18, and they were out-rebounding the Bulldogs 25-17, out-shooting the away team .379-.231, and they forced Jarvis into commiting 17 turnover before the break. The Cavs really started to pull away in the third quarter as they continued to shoot well. St. Gregory's led by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter, which was enough to put away Jarvis Christian for good.
After it was all said and done, SGU out-performed JCC in rebounding (52-34), field goal shooting (.390-.250), assists (15-7), and steals (14-9). The With that being said, the Bulldogs did force the Cavaliers to commit 31 turnovers, to their own 27.
Cavs newcomer, Alyssa Crase (JR/Greenwood, AR) had a tremendous game, as she went a perfect 8-8 from the field for 21 points, and she also grabbed 11 rebounds to pick up her first double-double of the season. Kelsie Howgard (SR/Menifee, Calif.) finished with 18 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals in the win. Ciara Asberry (JR/Tulsa, Okla.) added 8 points coming off of the bench, for the third best scoring total on the team. Deshawnta Lyday (JR/Tulsa, Okla) and Randi Thompson (JR/Duke, Okla) each crashed the glass hard, as they both finished with 7 rebounds. Taylor Hooks (JR/Oklahoma City, Okla.) finished with 5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and a game-high in assists with 6.
The Cavaliers will be back on the court on Nov. 7, when they play at Langston University at 6 PM.
