[Volleyball] SAGU Sweeps Cavs to End Playoff Run
WAXAHACHIE, Texas- St. Gregory's (17-13, 7-9 SAC) traveled to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (26-5, 14-1 SAC) on Tuesday to face the Lions in the opening round of the SAC Playoffs, and SAGU was able to sweep the Cavs to end their season. The Cavaliers trailed the Lions 24-17 in the first set, but fought back and was able to cut the deficit to just 24-23. With the Cavaliers knocking on the door, the Lions would score the set's final point to take the first set 25-23. From that point on, it was all SAGU, as they'd go on to win the next two sets 25-17 and 25-13.
Khyra Echols (FR/Plano, Texas) was St. Gregory's top performer on offense, as she finished the match with 9 kills and three block assists. Gabby Ware (JR/San Antonio, Texas) finished with 6 kills, 8 digs, and three block assists. BreAnna Smoak (JR/Iowa Park, Texas) and Kayrin Wells (SR/Mansfield, Texas) each added 5 kills to the Cavaliers team total of 30. Sarah Ahrens (JR/Wichita Falls, Texas) led the Cavs with 15 assists, and Sunny Clark (JR/Dublin, Texas) followed her up with 9 assists of her own. Kayley Davis (SO/Irving, Texas) was SGU's top defensive performer with 15 digs, and Natasha Rodriguez (SR/Pecos, Texas) followed her up with 8 digs.
The Cavaliers' 17 wins in 2017, is the second most wins in program history, and they will look to improve on that number once again next year. While the Cavs will miss thier seniors Courtney Murphy (SR/Tulsa, Okla.), Kayrin Wells, Krystal Lopez (SR/El Paso, Texas), and Natasha Rodriguez, they will look forward to returning their other 9 student-athletes.
