[Women's Basketball] Cavs Lose Hard Fought Battle Against Langston
LANGSTON, Okla.- The Cavaliers (1-3) traveled to Langston University (2-2) on Tuesday evening, and despite their best efforts, they fell in a close game, 67-74. The Lions came out firing in the first quarter and had a 27-16 lead after 10 minutes of play, but the Cavs battled back furiously in the second quarter and only trailed 34-36 at the half. St. Gregory's would outscore Langston in the third quarter to take a 53-52 lead into the final quarter. However, the Lions clawed their way back from a 7 point deficit with 3:58 to play, to end up taking the 74-67 win.
Shooting effiency was the key to Langston's home victory. The Lions shot for a .448 (26-58) field goal percentage and a .704 (19-27) free-throw percentage, compared to the Cavs' .338 (25-74) field goal percentage and .591 (13-22) free-throw percentage. The Cavaliers were able to out-rebound the Lions 44-41, and forced LU into 29 turnovers, compared to their own 27.
Deshawnta Lyday (JR/Tulsa, Okla) had a great game for SGU, as she finished with 15 points (7-13 FG) and 7 rebounds in just 25 minutes of on-court action. Randi Thompson (JR/Duke, Okla) also played very solid as she contributed 13 points (5-11 FG) and 6 rebounds. Alyssa Crase (JR/Greenwood, AR) finished with solid numbers with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals. Lauren Godbold (SO/Grand Prairie, Texas) finished with 9 points, while Swaranga Fernando (JR/Colombo, Sri Lanka) collected 7 points and 6 boards.
The Cavaliers will be back on the court in action on Fri., Nov. 10, when they play at Sounthern Nazarene University at 6 PM.
