Journalist Dean Jones believes that many people in the media are waiting to jump on Timo Werner when he fails but he backed the winger to be a very useful player for Tottenham over the coming months.
Werner has made a solid start to life at Spurs and even though he might not have set the world alight at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium yet, it is easy to see why Ange Postecoglou wanted to bring him through the door.
The German international is yet to open his account in front of goal for the Lilywhites but he has registered two assists in his first five matches.
Earlier this week, SportBILD (via Sport Witness) reported that Leipzig believe Tottenham are happy with the impact the 27-year-old has made since his switch, with the Bundesliga side expecting the North London side to activate the £17m option to sign the player permanently in the summer.
Is Timo Werner treated unfairly in the media?
Jones has now suggested that Werner gets a lot of unfair criticism, opining the forward is a good fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Werner is going to be questioned a lot purely because if it feels like that’s the narrative that’s supposed to surround him. Wherever he’s gone in the last few years, there’s been a lot of expectation around him and a lot of scrutiny.
I personally think he’s a good player. I don’t think he’s ever going to be an exceptional player at this point, like at one stage of his career it looked like he might be. But in terms of what Ange Postecoglou can get out of him, I’m actually quite optimistic and I think he’s still a good fit for Tottenham.
“But obviously, it’s that consistency with Timo Werner that’s always going to be the thing that you want to see more of and that’s what he’s got to prove across this this season.”

Even if Werner is perhaps not good enough to be a guaranteed starter for a side with Tottenham’s ambitions, he is an excellent squad player for Postecoglou to have.
The 27-year-old would be a very useful option to bring on as a substitute against tired legs, which is why it was a no-brainer for the club to sign him last month.
