I’m an interior designer – the five common mistakes I’m sick of seeing… too much grey and beige look awful
WHEN it comes to decorating your home, there are five rules you should stick to, at least according to this interior designer.
Jake Arnold explained why some things might seem great in theory, but they probably won’t work practically in your home.
These mistakes might be pretty common, but don’t worry, they’re really easy to fix.
Lighting is one of the main things people get wrong, Jake explained.
The pro said too much overhead lighting won’t give you a decorative look and adding more lamps and sconces will instantly upgrade your space.
You don’t have to spend a fortune to do this – a trip to your local charity shop can solve your lighting problems without leaving a big dent in your wallet.
People also waste money on rugs which are too small for their space, according to the home pro.
Ideally, your rug should fit most of the furniture on it, rather than floating in the middle of the room.
When it comes to painting your home there are two colours you should avoid at all costs – grey and beige.
They might work well as neutral shades but they’re so overdone and boring now.
“Why are we still doing grey? Can we do warmer tones or at least a little bit or variation,” Jake said.
It’s good to mix things up when it comes to wood tones too – the same tone throughout your whole house can look seriously dated.
Jake said: “There’s a level of consistency, but still, you’ve got to mix it up s little bit.”
That said, the context for your home’s style is something that’s often overlooked – so think twice before splashing out on furniture and fixtures.
If you’ve got an old house, modern trend can feel awkward and misplaced, and if you’re house is on the beach you probably don’t want to go for a rustic city-theme.
“Think about the history, the architecture and the vibe you want to create versus any trends you’ve seen.”
