For the next challenge, the remaining seven hopefuls were told they would need to create a dish using just leftover or waste material.
As the contestants scrambled to begin their food prep, viewers’ attention turned to one chef.
As Greg Wallace asked Chris what his dish was, the 43-year-old replied: “My leftover food is croissants.”
The circus performer continued: “So I’m going to make for you today a caramelised custard croissant mille-feuille.”
Talking the judges through the process of perfecting the dish, Chris said he would start by slicing the bottom of the croissant.
“I’m going to dust it with icing sugar and then I’m going to roll it out, compress it a little bit, bake it and then that should have a nice crisp when it cools down,” he said.
However, MasterChef viewers at home slammed the Henley-On-Thames native and said croissants ‘didn’t count’ as leftovers.
One fumed: “Do those croissants really count as “leftovers”?”
A second said: “So what are the leftovers then? 30 Fresh croissants, come again?”
“None of these ingredients are really leftovers though are they,” said a third.
While a fourth commented: “The challenge is to cook with leftovers and this lad is just using croissants How is a croissant a leftover.”
A firth remarked: “Apparently everyone buys bananas and croissants only to throw them away.”
MasterChef continues on BBC One and iPlayer.
