Full list of beaches where you could be slapped with £100 fine for walking your dog revealed – here’s where to avoid
A FULL list of beaches where dog walkers could be hit with a £100 fine for just exercising their pooch has been revealed.
It comes after three people were slapped with the on-the-spot hefty penalty for refusing to take their dogs off the beach at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island, Wales.
Numerous beaches across the UK now have a public space protection order in place which started on May 1 and lasts until September 30.
The instant fines are £100 put if they are contested and it goes to court, this could rise to £1,000.
As in past years, the ban has been introduced to keep kids safe and beaches clean from any dog mess.
The protection orders can cover the entire beach or just certain sections and people are advised to check where exactly they can and can’t take their four-legged friends.
Certain beaches include an outright ban, some will only let pooches visit at certain times of the day and others will require dogs to be kept on leads.
Guide dogs are not affected by the restrictions.
Cornwall
According to Cornwall Council, dogs are restricted on some beaches in the county during the summer and owners can risk getting a fine.
The following beaches restrict dogs from visiting between 10am and 6pm from July 1 to August 31:

- Chapel Porth Beach
- Church Cove
- Harveys Towans (Godrevy Point, Hayle)
- Hoodny Beach, Portwrinkle
- Housel Bay
- Kennack Sands Beach
- Kynance Cove
- Maenporth Beach
- Mousehole Beach to Skilly Beach
- Wherry Town to Battery Rocks
- Longrock level crossing to Marazion
- Perranuthnoe
- Poldu Beach
- Polurrian Cove Beach
- Porth Beach
- Porthcurno Beach
- Porthgwarra Beach
- Porthgwidden Beach
- Porthleven West
- Porthpean Beach
- Portmellon Cove
- Porthreath Beach including Harbour
- Portwrinkle Harbour
- Praa Sands Beach
- Readymoney Cove
- St George’s Well
- St Ives Harbour Beach
- Summer’s Beach

There are also some Cornish beaches that have restrictions running from May 15 to September 30 from 10am to 6pm.

There are three beaches that ban dogs all year round, 24 hours a day:

- Copperhouse Pool
- Hayle Estuary
East Devon
Pet owners can walk their dogs on all East Devon beaches between October 1 and April 30, but they are prohibited between May 1 and September 30.
According to East Devon District Council (EDDC), Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Beer and Seaton beaches all have dog exclusion areas which started on May 1.
· Exmouth beach – Dogs are allowed all year at the two ends of the beach from the third break water east and from the Octagon café west. Dogs are prohibited from the centre portion of the beach from May 1 to September 30.
· Sidmouth Town beach – Dogs are allowed all year on Port Royal beach at the eastern end of the prom. Dogs are banned from the main town beach from May 1 to September 30.
· Sidmouth Jacobs Ladder beach – Dogs are banned from the immediate area of Jacobs ladder from May 1 to September 30. They are permitted on the west end of the beach starting circa 100m from the ladder.
· Seaton beach – Dogs are allowed at the two ends of Seaton beach all year. Dogs are banned from the middle section between May 1 and September 30.
· Beer beach – Dogs are allowed on the eastern half of beer beach all year round. Dogs are banned from the western half from May 1 to September 30.
· Budleigh Salterton beach – Dogs are allowed all year at either end of the beach, east from Lime Kiln car park, and West from the west end of the prom. Dogs are banned from the centre portion of the beach between May 1 and September 30.
Torbay Coastline
Dogs are not allowed on certain beaches in Torbay from May 1 to September 30 every year, according to Torbay Harbour.
During this time, dogs must also be kept on a lead on promenades adjacent to the beaches where dogs are not allowed.
The beaches include:

- Broadsands Beach
- Corbyn Head
- Goodrington Sands – South Sands: between the cliffs at the southern end and the signs at Middlestone to the North
- Hollicombe Beach
- Meadfoot Beach- South western part between notices displayed on the foreshore
- Oddicombe Beach
- Paignton Sands
- Preston Sands
- Shoalstone Pool
- Torre Abbey Sands
North Devon
Dogs are allowed on all beaches owned by North Devon Council.
These canine-friendly beaches include:
- Capstone
- Hele bay
- Ilfracombe harbour
- Larkstone
- Lee Bay
- Sandy Cove (Bath Beach), Lee
- Raparee
- Wildersmouth
Privately-owned beaches in North Devon have different rules and regulations.
Dorset
Walkers are banned from taking their pets onto the main sandy portion of Weymouth Beach between Greenhill Groyne to the dog exercise area.
However, anyone who wants to take their canine friends onto Weymouth beach may still do so all year round from the area between Greenhill Groyne and Overcombe as well as the dog exercise area by the Pavilion.
Dogs are also banned from West Bay, West Dorset, according to the Dorset Echo.
This only applies to the beach on the east side of the harbour and the west side of the harbour. The beach separated by the large rock groyne has no restriction.
East Sussex
Dogs are banned from the following beaches until September 30, according to The Argus:
- Bognor – from Park Road to Gloucester Road
- Brighton – central beach
- Eastbourne – main resort beaches from the pier to the Wish Tower
- Felpham – from Canning Road to Felpham Sailing Club
- Goring –between the boat launch ramp in line with Seafield Avenue and the launch ramp at Worthing Sailing Club
- Hastings – from harbour arm to the pier, and from Warrior Square to the Royal Victoria Hotel
- Littlehampton – from East Pier to Norfolk Road
- Seaford – from Edinburgh Road to West View
- Worthing – from Heene Road to Splashpoint
Kent
According to Kent Live, from May 1 to September 30 dogs are not allowed on Margate Main Sands, Pegwell Bay in Ramsgate, and Viking Bay in Broadstairs.
Other beaches in Kent where dogs are not allowed include Herne Bay Central, Tankerton, and Sheerness.
Meanwhile, from May 1 to September 30, dogs are not allowed between 10 am to 6 pm on Botany Bay and Joss Bay in Broadstairs and St Mildred’s Bay in Westgate-on-Sea.
YORKSHIRE
There are nine beaches in Yorkshire where full or partial restrictions are in place, according to The Examiner.

Wales
From May, dogs are not allowed on certain beaches in Wales. Here is the full list, according to Wales Online:
Anglesey
Dogs are currently restricted from areas at seven of Anglesey’s beaches. These include:
- Beaumaris
- Benllech
- Cemaes Bay
- Llanddwyn, Newborough
- Llanddona
- Trearddur Bay
- Porth Dafarch
At Benllech, Cemaes Bay, and Trearddur Bay dogs must be kept on their leads on the promenades.
Bridgend
- Rest Bay (Rest Point until Golf Bay)
- Town Beach
- Coney Beach
- Trecco Bay
Carmarthenshire
Partial bans at:
- Cefn Sidan: with a dog-free zone on just one mile of its length between May and September dogs and their owners can still enjoy seven miles of golden sands even in the summer months.
- Llansteffan: the beach in Llansteffan has restrictions where a strip of beach is inaccessible to dogs and is clearly marked with signs.
- Pendine: the dog restrictions at Pendine beach apply to the section between the two slipways.
Conwy
- Rhos on Sea Beach (between Rhos Point and the eastern end of the Cayley Promenade)
- Colwyn Bay Beach (between the Victoria Pier and the entrance to Eirias Park).
- Pensarn Beach (between the embedded wooden posts by the café and the embedded concrete posts at the western end of the promenade).
- Kinmel Bay Beach (between Dinas Avenue, Kinmel Bay and Sandbank Road Towyn)
- Llandudno North Shore Beach (from Llandudno Pier to Clarence Road)
- Llandudno West Shore Beach (between the two stone groynes)
- Penmaenmawr Beach (from the east side of the café to the sailing club slipway)
- Llanfairfechan Beach (between the 2 slipways extending down from the promenade to the Low Water Mark)
- Small Sandy Beach at Rhos Point, Rhos on Sea (all year)
Ceredigion

There are signs and maps on the beach to show where you can take your dog during the summer months.
