Emergency services attended the scene, on Alfreton Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire after reports of a woman falling into the carriageway near the junction with Willowbridge Lane.

The woman was rushed to hospital just after 11am on Friday, May 5, but sadly pronounced dead in hospital a short while later.

Nottinghamshire Police Detective Constable Adam Rigby said: “This was a very sad incident that resulted in a woman’s death.

“We are currently working to understand what happened so we can give her family the answers they need.

“We are asking any witnesses who have not yet spoken to us to come forward with information, and are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have recorded dashcam footage at or near the scene.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting incident 241 of May 5.

This comes as it was revealed last year that eight people died after crashes involving mobility scooters.

Drivers of the electric-powered buggies had a record 300 accidents which resulted in injuries.

Department of Transport statistics show that in addition to the eight deaths, 86 other accidents in Britain left people seriously hurt.

Richard Jones, 78, of Prestatyn, North Wales, died in August last year when he lost control of his scooter and plunged eight feet over a seafront wall before his buggy landed on him.

In June, Derek McGlone, 69, died in hospital after his mobility scooter collided with a van in an accident near Doncaster.

In August, police in Weston- Super-Mare, Somerset, also appealed for witnesses after a three-year-old boy was knocked down by a elderly mobility scooter driver who failed to stop.

The toddler needed hospital treatment.

A Department of Transport spokesman said: “Riders are encouraged to carry out training at the time of purchase and must comply with road safety laws at all times.”
