My one-pot cheesy dinner recipe is kid-friendly and you can get all of the ingredients from Dollar Tree for $7.50
A CHEF and Dollar Tree aficionado proved that you don’t have to break the bank to eat a well-balanced meal.
She said you can feed your family of four a meal that includes protein, carbs, and veggies for only $7.50.
Rebecca Chobat (@dollartreedinners) has found her niche in sharing delicious recipes that only require Dollar Tree buys.
In one video, she revealed her one pot chicken and rice dish that will leave the whole house begging for a repeat.
“This one pot cheesy chicken, broccoli, and rice skillet costs just $7.50 to make and will feed four people,” she began.
First up on your grocery list will be two bags of Knorr Cheddar Broccoli Rice sides, which each cost $1.25.
You’ll also want to buy a $1.25 bag of the frozen winter blend, which contains broccoli and cauliflower florets.
Two $1.25 bags of spicy chicken nuggets will supply the protein portion of the meal, and a $1.25 block of cheddar cheese will give it that sharp and creamy flavor.
Rebecca began by chopping up the winter blend veggies into bite size pieces, then did the same with the chicken nuggets.
“Over on the skillet, on medium high heat, I added a little bit of vegetable oil and I sauteed the broccoli mixture, just for a few minutes to begin to thaw it.”
She then threw in the two bags of rice and added four cups of water.
“I allowed this mixture to come to a boil and then tossed in my chicken nuggets.
“I opted to add them at this point because I know the breading would incorporate and become part of the sauce, so all of the seasoning in the nuggets would also season the sauce.”
After mixing everything together, cover your pot and let it simmer on a low heat setting for 15 minutes.
Once those 15 minutes have passed, turn the stove off and let the dish sit in the covered pot for an additional 10-15 minutes.
“Afterwards, remove the lid and add in your shredded cheddar cheese. Toss gently to combine and allow the residual heat from the rice melt the cheese,” she demonstrated, while proving that the Dollar Tree cheese does indeed melt, despite what the skeptics believe.
And voila: your rice skillet is ready to plate.
“This turned out really fantastic,” she said, admitting that she first tried to complete the recipe in a slow cooker, which was a total fail.
Perhaps the best part was that the meal came out to $7.50 total, which meant only $1.87 per person.
