I love my daughter’s name but lots of people say it reminds them of smoking – it’s split opinions
A WOMAN’S plans for her daughter’s name have been left in ashes after people said it reminded them of smoking.
Rather than drop the name completely, she decided to consider it as a middle name and took her quandary to an online forum to solicit their opinions.
But this move did little to reassure her about the name.
It merely confirmed her worst suspicions that the name reminded people of a 40-a-day habit.
She shared her dilemma on Reddit.
In her post, she asked: “Thoughts on the name Nicolette?”
She liked it but there was some understandable hesitation.
“I like this name more than Nicole. However, there’s the anti-smoking gum Nicorette that people brought up.”
Comments to her post were unlikely to reassure her about the name and its unfortunate images of a nicotine habit.
This comment was typical of others: “My first thought was the smoking gum, sorry!” they said.
It reminded this person of something too: “Same Nicorette helped me quit.”
Similarly, this commenter couldn’t shake off ciggie associations: It makes me think of cigarettes. I didn’t know why until I saw you say it was an anti-smoking gum. But it’s a big no for me.”
But at least one Nicolette had her say in the comments section.
“I always liked my name and the gum has only been mentioned once to me by a bitter guy I worked with. It is what it is. Someone is always going to have something to say,” she said reasonably.
However, there was some food for thought from the final comment and a word of caution.
“I’m 29 and grew up with a friend named Nicolette and in elementary school, some kids called her Nicorette.”
