Leeds vs Newcastle preview
Big Sam couldn’t have had a tougher start to his short reign as Leeds boss when they travelled to the Etihad last weekend.
Although the fact they came away with just a 2-1 defeat and forced the league chasers into running the ball into the corner to kill time late on suggests an immediate improvement arrived.
Their task of staying in the division took an almighty dent following that defeat however, with West Ham beating Manchester United, Everton thrashing Brighton at the Amex and Nottingham Forest beating Southampton to round off the weekend.
That leaves Leeds in 19th spot and two points off safety with three massive games to come.
For Newcastle, they’re very much still in control of a Champions League spot, despite a disappointing home defeat to Arsenal.
It could have been so very different if Jacob Murphy’s effort after 70 seconds had crept in instead of hitting the post, with Arsenal taking the lead shortly after and clever use of gamesmanship to continuously break the game up.
The Toon are now only three points clear of Liverpool who sit in fifth, though they do have a game in hand on them.
The reverse fixture between the sides at St James’ finished goalless and another nervy afternoon is expected at lunchtime on Saturday.
Everton vs Man City preview
Everton went into their Bank Holiday clash at high flying Brighton with just one win in their last 11 games and on a seven-game winless run.
So nobody could envisage a thumping 5-1 win at the Seagulls in which they blew Roberto Di Zerbi’s men away in the first half.
As much as it was incredible, it was also very much needed, taking the Toffees out the relegation zone and now two points clear.
That should inspire the Goodison crowd when Manchester City come calling on Sunday.
City head into the weekend with a one point lead at the top having played a game less than Arsenal in second.
With the Gunners playing later on Sunday, they have the chance to put some serious pressure on Mikel Arteta’s men ahead of them hosting Brighton.
But as mentioned earlier, they didn’t get things completely their own way at home to Leeds last weekend and this game at Everton is sandwiched between two mammoth Champions League semi finals with Real Madrid, which they will of course have more than one eye on.
Everton rode their luck at times when the sides faced off at the Etihad earlier this season and they’ll need to be on top of their game to get the same outcome again here.
Leeds vs Newcastle betting tips
Less is more
Newcastle are a shade off odds-on for this one and more than deserve to be.
But this game could be a lot tighter than it would appear on paper, as shown by the 0-0 draw earlier this season.
There have only been three goals scored in the last three games between these sides combined, and this one could prove edgy with Big Sam involved and predictably making Leeds tougher to beat.
Under 1.5 goals at 7/2 looks a tasty price but under 2.5 is still odds-against and a safer play at 13/10.
Cornered
Newcastle racked up nine corners despite the defeat to Arsenal.
Prior to that they won 11 corners against Southampton, 14 at Everton and nine at home to Spurs.
The way they play with their wingers will always get those sorts of opportunities and we reckon that’s a tactic they’ll use again this week.
The maximum offered is 6.5+ (seven corners or more) so that’s the option we’re taking.
Everton vs Man City betting tips
Goals at each end
After banging in five at Brighton, the Everton forward players must be full of confidence heading here.
Especially knowing you’ll always get a chance against City, as Leeds showed only a few days ago.
City will score in this one, of that there is surely minimal doubt.
And like in the draw between the sides earlier this season, we reckon both teams will find the net in this one too, but City will go on to win the contest.
Home corner
Everton will be strong from set pieces and it’d be no surprise to see them playing for them here.
They’ll have their opportunities in the City half and will hope to capitalise when they do work those chances.
They recently clocked up nine corners at Leicester.
Though this is a completely different test, with the Goodison crowd behind them, the chance is there to rack up at least half of that anyway.
