I’m an interior whizz – there’s a mistake everyone makes when decorating their home, my ‘rule of thumb’ avoids it
AN interiors whizz said even the smallest design choices can make or break the feel of your home.
She revealed one of the most common mistakes people make and how to fix it.
Shea McGee (@studio.mcgee) is a renown interior designer with her own Netflix show, Dream Home Makeover, that focuses on transforming simple homes into something out of a magazine spread.
She uses her TikTok to offer guidance to those looking to revamp their space.
In one video, the experienced decorator said an error people fall victim to is hanging their artwork too high or too far apart.
“One of the most common mistakes I see is incorrectly placed art work,” she began.
“There are a few rules that I follow.”
“When I’m hanging a piece of artwork and there’s nothing underneath it, I hang it 60 inches from the floor to the center.”
This rule of thumb changes, however, when there is something like a sofa or console table underneath the art.
“Then I’m looking at like four to eight inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the artwork,” she explained, adding that she follows this measurement when hanging above mantles as well.
When it comes to gallery walls, or even just two side-by-side pieces, she advised leaving two to three inches between each frame.
“Unless it’s a really eclectic gallery wall and as you’re creating that look of the mix and match, you have to do some larger gaps to make the gallery wall work. That’s the exception.”
In the caption, Shea revealed that she follows these measurements in all of her projects.
Viewers applauded her take.
“40 year gallerist here. Agree with all of this. Most folks hang art too high,” one person wrote.
“Yes!! It’s such an eye sore when art/photos are hung too high,” added another.
“This is something I immediately notice in someone’s home, if their photos are artwork aren’t hung right,” a third chimed in.
