Urgent warning to dog owners over bed time mistake which could prove deadly
AN urgent warning has been issued to dog owners over a bed time mistake which could prove deadly.
A vet says canines of all kinds can be at risk – but Brits with puppies, older dogs and flat-faced pooches should take extra care.
Katy Alexander said while it can be tempting to let your pets snuggle up and share the bed with you, it can be a dangerous move to let them under the covers.
The expert told the Telegraph: “Very small dogs, puppies, elderly dogs, and dogs with arthritis or other mobility problems may struggle to find a safe exit if they are getting too hot.”
Katy, who is a veterinary research lead at Blue Cross, said pooches’ body temperatures are a few degrees higher than humans and can easily overheat.
She warned owners of flat-faced hounds such as French Bulldogs and Pugs should “be extra vigilant” as there’s an increased risk of them getting too hot.
However, if your dog does love sleeping on the bed, Katy said there are signs to look out for to know it’s not uncomfortably warm.
She said: “Dogs who are starting to overheat will pant and become agitated; if you notice this we recommend removing the duvet or blankets immediately.”
The vet added that sleeping with both your dog, and an electric blanket is a big no-no.
Katy explained: “Weighted blankets which may be too heavy to allow safe exit should be avoided.
“Heated blankets may risk burns and the electrical cord poses a danger if chewed.”
Her concerns were mirrored by animal behaviourist Karly Smith.
She said: “All pets must be treated with dignity, kindness and respect and should only be placed in situations that are safe, appropriate and that they enjoy.
“There will be some dogs that like to snuggle under a duvet and if this is something they want to do then this would be fine but it is important to not force our dogs to do things they are unfamiliar with or that they might find frightening.”
