Reiss had been hiding the fact he had a secret wife which left Sonia inconsolable.
However, there was still more to the story.
His wife, Debbie, was actually under care and supervision having suffered a stroke which left her unable to move and communicate.
Upon finding this news out, it forced Sonia to re-consider that maybe hers and Reiss’ relationship may still be able to move forward.
In order to allow Sonia to feel comfortable about the circumstances of their fledgling romance, Reiss took her to visit Debbie.
On their second visit to be beside Debbie’s bed, Reiss took a nap while Sonia looked on with a smile on her face.
The news that Sonia was still considering pursuing the romance sent shockwaves through the Square, particularly with Kathy Beale when she chose to forego her extra special Eurovision themed birthday party.
As Reiss awoke, he asked Sonia how she was feeling.
Despite protesting to be “fine”, it appeared that she truly felt otherwise.
However, many BBC fans were left feeling uneasy about Sonia watching over a woman she barely knew and that she was romantically involved with her husband.
Reiss had even introduced Sonia as a friend to Debbie.
Writing online, one fan penned: “I’m reeeeeeally uncomfortable with Reiss bringing Sonia back to see his wife. #EastEnders.”
Another added: “I’m reeeeeeally uncomfortable with Reiss bringing Sonia back to see his wife. #EastEnders.”
A third penned: “#EastEnders nobody believes Sonia has made the right choice.”
It appears as though only time will tell if Sonia decided to remain with Reiss.
But will the guilt of their relationship eat her up to the point of crumbling?
