I gave my old-fashioned staircase & entryway the ultimate makeover for £80 – it was so beautiful it left people in tears
A WOMAN who totally transformed her staircase and entryway for just £80 shared how she did it without breaking the bank.
Mum-of-three Jessie knew she wanted to update her staircase after she got a new laminate flooring, which didn’t match the warm tones of the wooden stairs.
After removing any furniture from the entryway, she got to work sanding everything down by hand, which she admitted was a lot harder than she expected.
“This was not a weekend warrior project, this was not easy,” she said.
But despite her doubts about getting it done, Jessie powered through and started stripping the old wood stain from each stair.
She used Citristrip to lift the old paint and stain before scraping it off herself.
“It really did the bulk of the work, you just have to put it on and you wait about 30 minutes,” she explained.
Once the old paint was completely removed, Jessie primed and painted the outside of the staircase and the skirting board in a bright white shade.
Then it was finally time to stain the top of each step black to match with the cool toned floor.
Jessie experimented to see how long she should leave the stain on before committing to doing the rest of the steps, for the dark colour she wanted 10 minutes was the perfect time.
She also did every other step, and then waited for them tor completely dry before doing the rest so her family could still get up and downstairs easily.
The banister also got a matching coat of black paint, as well as the spindles.
“I think it looks so elegant and so upscale with the black on black,” Jessie said.
She continued: “This took many many layers of paint, I think it was two coats of primer and about four coats of the black paint.”
Overall, the DIY whizz spent £80 on the project and loved the look of it, even though it was stressful doing it on her own with three kids.
She finished everything off by steam mopping the entryway floor to lift off a few dots of paint and swept up the dust that was leftover from all the sanding to show off the posh new look.
Viewers of the transformation video on YouTube loved the new staircase too, and praised Jessie’s skills.
One commented: “I remember doing projects in my house and just crying with frustration and fatigue.
“So, for what it’s worth from a random stranger on the internet, I’m proud of you!”
And another wrote: “Jessie, it looks absolutely gorgeous! You should be so proud of yourself! What an incredible accomplishment!”
